US Election 2024: US Should Protect Voters Ahead of 2024 Election

In the United States, there will be an important election on November 5, 2024. People will vote to choose their leaders, and this election could affect how the government deals with human rights issues. However, there are some big problems with voting rights in the country, even a year before the election.

In the previous elections in 2020 and 2022, we saw that there are problems with how people get information. False information and misleading news on TV and the internet can be a big issue. Some people also tried to scare or threaten those who run the elections, and there were even attempts to interfere with the voting process.

Experts are worried that these problems might happen again in the next national election if we don't do something about it quickly. On top of that, there are new laws in many states that make it harder for people to vote, and this is a big concern.

According to the Brennan Center for Justice, at least 14 states have made it tougher to vote in 2023. In Texas, there's a law called SB1 that makes it harder to vote by limiting things like mail-in voting and help for older people and those with disabilities. North Carolina also passed some laws that could make it more difficult to vote, especially if you want to vote early.

But there are some positive steps too. Congresswoman Terri Sewell introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in September. This is a good law that Human Rights Watch supports, and they have supported it before.

One important part of this law is called "preclearance," which means that states with a history of discriminating against voters have to get federal approval before changing their election laws and voting maps. This used to be a crucial part of the Voting Rights Act in 1965, but the Supreme Court changed it in 2013. It's good that this new law brings it back.

To protect the rights of voters and follow international human rights laws, Congress should watch over the states that still discriminate against certain communities. This will help prevent harm to voters in 2024 and beyond. We kindly request you to disseminate this news and provide your insights in the comments section. Thank you
