US, Australia, Canada Added 100,000 New Citizens From India in 2021

In 2021, a new report from the OECD showed that more Indians became citizens of other countries than anyone else. Over 100,000 Indians became citizens of the US, Australia, Canada, and more. Also, more than 11,000 Indians got passports from the United Kingdom.

This means that India was the top country where new citizens came from for these four nations. But for other countries, the situation was different. In 2021, about 2,700 Indians became citizens of New Zealand, making them the second-largest group of new citizens there. On the other hand, only about 2,000 Indians became Spanish citizens, which ranked 19th. The Netherlands and Sweden also accepted around 1,700 and 1,600 new Indian citizens, ranking 5th and 12th, respectively.

Even though there was a 15% decrease in the number of Indians becoming citizens of OECD countries compared to 2019, India still had the highest number. The second spot went to Mexico, which also saw a drop in numbers. Most former Mexican nationals who became citizens joined the United States. Syria saw a significant increase, with a 150% rise in the number of Syrians becoming citizens of OECD countries. This is because many Syrians left their home country during the civil war and are now becoming citizens in their new countries, like Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany.
