The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), which is a group not linked to any political party, shared this news on Monday.

The first debate is on September 16 at Texas State University in San Marcos. After that, the second one will be on October 1 at Virginia State University in Petersburg.

The last debate will be just over a week later at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City on October 9.

There's also a debate planned for the vice presidential candidates on September 25 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

More details about these debates, like how they will be structured and who will moderate, will be told to us in 2024, according to the CPD.

The co-chairs of the CPD, Frank Fahrenkopf and Antonia Hernandez, said that these chosen places will help bring important conversations to people in the U.S. and around the world.

They said, "The United States’ general election debates, watched live worldwide, are a model for many other countries: the opportunity to hear and see leading candidates address serious issues in a fair and neutral setting."

This tradition has been going on since 1976. In 2024, students at these four universities will help bring more important conversations to people.

"We are deeply grateful to the University of Utah for hosting its second general election debate, to Lafayette College and Texas State University for the first CPD debates in Pennsylvania and Texas, and to Virginia State University for the first debate ever held at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU)," they added.

All this is happening while the races to choose the candidates for each party continue.

Recent polls show that Donald Trump is still ahead for the Republican party, while President Joe Biden's popularity is going down in national polls.

Even though Trump is expected to be the Republican nominee, there's no promise he will be part of the three presidential debates.

He has not taken part in any of the Republican debates so far, saying it's not necessary as he is leading in the polls. Instead, he has held other events.

In 2020, the first debate between Trump and Biden did not go well for Trump. The second debate was canceled because Trump got Covid. The third one was less argumentative as the candidates' microphones were muted during each other’s initial two-minute answers to limit interruptions.
